What Makes an SBA Loan Different
For most programs, the SBA doesn't lend money directly — it guarantees a portion of a loan made by a participating bank or lender. That guarantee lowers the lender's risk, which is a big part of why SBA loans can offer more favorable rates and terms than a business might qualify for on its own.
Common SBA Loan Programs
- SBA 7(a) Loans. The most widely used SBA program, flexible enough to cover working capital, equipment, real estate, or refinancing, with loan amounts and terms that scale to the size of the project.
- SBA Express Loans. A faster-turnaround version of the 7(a) program for smaller financing needs, available as either a term loan or a revolving line of credit.
- SBA 504 Loans. Long-term, fixed-rate financing structured through a partnership between a bank and a nonprofit development company, generally used for real estate or major equipment purchases.
- SBA Microloans. Smaller loans, often issued through nonprofit lenders, aimed at startups and small operations that need modest working capital.
- SBA Disaster Loans. Available to qualified businesses recovering from a federally declared disaster, covering both physical damage and working capital needs.
- International Trade & Export Loans. Designed for businesses that export, or that compete against imports, to fund growth in international markets.
